We were able to walk in and explore the Duluth Heritage Sports Center on our trip to the North Shore. An impressive venue even with a hockey finder game is going on, the boys hope to play there one day after exploring the building. We also attempted to walk into Silver Bay earlier in the day, but the facility was locked. Two years ago I was able to drop into that one, but the ice was out then. Still cool to see it.
The Heritage Center is like a museum, and I could have spent an hour reading and looking at everything. It’s a striking wall of photos of the collegiate players the city has produced. Perhaps the most impressive idea I saw was the star players’ banners had their local park or rink they grew up playing/skating on. If you look at the banner by the jackets, Dave Spehar, Mr. Hockey 1996, grew up skating at Glen Avon Park. I didn’t take a picture of it, but the north wall has team photos of the squirts to bantams, and all of them were taken at dusk with the lift bridge behind them. I’d imagine touches like that help to instill a great deal of pride in your town, your program, your team, and yourself as a young player as a product of that town.
